Leonard,
102, to open new Westgate Surgery
A CENTENARIAN will herald a new era of High Street healthcare
in Peterborough today, when the Boots store becomes one of the first
in the UK to offer a doctor's surgery.
Leonard Voller (102) will be joined by NHS Peterborough chief executive
Angela Bailey, a senior partner at Westgate Surgery and a patient representative
to officially open the new premises of Westgate Surgery, which has moved
on to the first floor of Boots, in the Queensgate shopping centre.
As part of the North Westgate city centre development plans, Westgate
Surgery was likely to be issued with a Compulsory Purchase Order, requiring
the practice to move out of its previous location.
Boots had spare capacity, and planning permission was granted for a
GP surgery to be located there.
The surgery will be leasing the premises from Boots, and will remain
independent.
Mr Voller, who has been using Westgate Surgery since 1934, was invited
to cut the ribbon to mark the opening of the new premises.
Ms Bailey said: "The relocation of the surgery is part of our wider
plan to improve the quality and access to healthcare facilities across
the city."
Practice manager at the surgery Geoff Tinson said: "The doctors
and staff of Westgate Surgery strive to maintain the long traditions
of medical care within this practice, while keeping abreast of advances
in medicine.
"We look forward to working with our patients and continuing to
provide an efficient, appropriate and accessible service in a modern
environment to people in the Greater Peterborough area."
